The second Mongui Maduro Lecture of this year will be given by Anthropologist and filmmaker Dr. Angela Roe. In her presentation which is titled “ Multiculturalism in Curacao :Racism, Racial denial and the National Yu’ I Korsou identity Dr. Roe will address the issue of Racial inequality in Curacao and explain how racism became a partially hidden constituent of the island’s ideology of National identity. The lecture will focus on the historical formation of multiculturalism in Curacao in tandem with Curacao’s ideologies of race and national identity.
Dr. Angela Roe is assistant professor at the Faculty of Social and Economic Studies at the University of Curacao. In 2014 Roe produced and directed the documentary Sombra di Kolò (The Shadow of Color), a feature documentary based on a qualitative study into race relations in Curaçao. With this film she won the prestigious Boelie van Leeuwen award in 2015.
Angela Roes lecture promises to become a thought provoking presentation which will spark a lot of discussion. The lecture will be held on Thursday April 4th at 6.30 pm at the roof terrace of the Mongui Maduro Library.
